Everyone has a thing they love. For some, it’s a sports team. They have all the jerseys, throw huge game-day parties, and ride the wave of the wins or losses of their team with an unfailing heart. For others, it’s a tv or movie franchise: Star Wars, Star Trek, The Walking Dead. Still others are wild about book series or anime or comic books. We all have that one thing, and some of us choose to celebrate that thing we love with others who love our thing, or very similar things. It’s springtime, so you know what that means, right? Guilty pleasures. We all have ’em. This is one of mine. What’s yours?
Defined as “something, such as a movie, television program, or piece of music that one enjoys despite feeling that it is not generally held in high regard,” I can think of nothing as revered and reviled in equal measure as comic books. Like the rest of my reading history, I enoyed an odd assortment of titles. Most were independent titles not forced to conform to the restrictive comics code. Graphic novels like Maus, a story about Jews in WWII, and the original Watchmen. Monster comics like Michael Morbius, the Living Vampire, and the excellent I…Vampire series found in the House of Mystery.
